Herbal Plants you can grow in your garden are the perfect solution for those of us who love to garden and natural treatments. With the passage of time, we as a human civilisation have been evolving extensively. One could have never thought of a time when artificial intelligence would be possible. Technology and development has certainly upgraded education, commute, lifestyle, governance, healthcare and what not. This is evident from the magnitude of ever increasing human civilisation and rise in population.

Advancement in Healthcare

Technology and advancement in healthcare have contributed effectively towards creating better infrastructure for treatment, effective medicine and surgery. Consequently, the cure for most of the diseases is possible today. Moreover, life expectancy (global average) has significantly risen and death rates have dropped. This is all because of modern developments. However, we cannot aspire to establish a brighter future without a foundation of research done by our ancestors. In a nutshell, all present day developments have been acquired through researches, discoveries and inventions made in earlier times. Aryabhatta, Pythagoras, Nikola Tesla are some of the instances of great minds in history. When it comes to medicine, Ayurveda has given a lot to modern medicine. Herbal plants play a major role in treating lots of diseases.

Vajra danti-Baleria/Porcupine Flower

Vajra danti is one of the vital ingredients that help to relieve toothache, joint pains, respiratory diseases, and stomach disorders. It is popularly used in regular toothpaste, pain relieving creams, joint pains and a variety of other ailments; and it has several cosmetic uses.

Ashwagandha - Indian Ginseng

Another popular medicinal herbal plants easily available across India, Ashwagandha helps in cardiovascular health, improves memory and cognitive function, treats insomnia, arthritis and rheumatism. It is also a natural ingredient among tea and spices produced in India. In today’s urban lifestyle, Ashwagandha is really helpful as it reduces symptoms of depression and other mental diseases.

Guduchi - Giloe

Although some studies say that Guduchi have adverse effects related to pregnancy, breastfeeding etc, this herb is best suited for people with respiratory or asthmatic issues. It boosts immunity, reduces asthmatic symptoms, treats chronic fever, improves digestion, treats diabetes and fights respiratory problems. It has become very important to maintain healthy immunity in this corona (Covid 19) pandemic. According to health experts, drinking Giloe leaves mixed with fruit juices can increase immunity as they are rich in vital minerals like phosphorus. Its leaves can also be used in tea in addition to boiling water and fruit juice.

Pippali - Long Pepper

Pippali is one of the most favorite herbal plants components among Indians used in spices and seasoning. Apart from adding up deliciousness in mean, it improves appetite, digestion, provides respiratory support in asthma, treatment of spleen, liver disorders, back pain, arthritis, and fractures. It is also used for lung problems.

Mandukaparni - Indian Pennywort/Gotu Kola

Mandukaparni is best for enhancing wisdom and intellect. People prefer to give it to young children in their early growth age. It improves memory, strengthens brain, reduces stress, insomnia, depression, anxiety, treats skin disorders like eczema, detoxifies liver and blood.

Pathar Chatta - Air Plant

Pathar chatta is an organic alternative to allopathic medicines in terms of its relevance in treating kidney stones, other urinary disorders, blood pressure, healing wounds and controlling bleeding in diarrhoea, headaches and eye pain. Also known as air plant or cathedral bells, it is predominantly found in Madagascar. They constrict the blood vessels and decrease the rate of platelet aggregation.

Neem - Margosa

Neem might be the most popular herbal plants in Ayurveda medicine. It treats hair, skin and dental problems, relieves constipation, bloating and cramping, lowers risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases and boosts immunity. Neem branches are traditionally used in its raw form as a substitute for brushing teeth in traditional Indian households.

Tulsi - Holy Basil

Tulsi is one of the most crucial plants not just in traditional medicine but also in Indian mythology. It is useful in case of respiratory disorders like bronchitis, cures malaria, dengue fever, reduces stress, heart disorders, detoxifies and prevents kidney. Tulsi leaves have high edible value and normally used in traditional non alcoholic drinks.

Datura - Devil’s Trumpet

Datura treats asthma, relieves hypertension, palpitation, suppress ear infections, treats baldness.

Mahabala - Prickly Sida

Mahabala is best used to treat mild cases of debility, fever, helps in irritability of bladder and gonorrhoea, relieves swelling and headache.

Aparajita - Butterfly Pea

Aparajita is known for Improving memory, learning, voice quality and problems of throat, soothing eyes and helps improve vision, relieves indigestion.

Amla - Indian Gooseberry

Amla is easily found and gardened in the Indian subcontinent. It is regularly used in Indian household in its raw or a little processed form. It helps reducing blood sugar, high in digestive, prevent ulcers, slows down ageing, rich in vitamin C and improves eyesight.

Brahmi - Water Hyssop

Brahmi, as also known as herbal plants of grace helps cure gastric ulcers and irritable bowel syndrome, respiratory health, metabolism, epileptic fits, bipolar disorder and relieves arthritis. Along with its health benefits, Brahmi makes up delicious non alcoholic drink widely used in South Asian household. The Brahmi flower is known to stimulate cerebral blood flow. Kalmegh - Kariyat / King of Bitters

Kalmegh has been traditionally used to cure infections. It is normally promoted as a dietary supplement to prevent and cure cancer. Furthermore, it improves immunity, helps in regulating blood sugar level, has anti-acne, anti-inflammatory properties, protects the liver and supports intestine. Also prevent the common cold and flu (influenza).

Ghritkumari - Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is used in a variety of ways in Indian kitchens. It regulates blood sugar levels, cures burns, cold sores, moisturizes hair and scalp, provides antioxidants and reduces inflammation. Aloe Vera juice is highly recommended by fitness professionals. It also provides protection from UV irradiation.

Behada - Bibhitaki

Behada is a tree known for its fruit ‘Triphala’ which has high medicinal value. It is primarily used in hair products. It is beneficial for hair, throat, eyes, used to dress wounds arrests bleeding, prevents aging, imparts longevity, boosts immunity, lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Bakul - Maulsari/Bullet Wood

Bakul is a mid sized lush green tree that is of multiple value. Not only that it is used in traditional ayurvedic medicines, it also provides edible fruits and quality timber for various purposes. It also bears fragrant flowers. Other than this, it is most beneficial in treating and curing dental problems, effective in leucoderma, relieves blood pressure naturally, useful in diarrhoea, dysentery and intestinal worms.

Mehendi - Henna

Henna effectively treats jaundice, skin problems like boils and burns, prickly heat, headaches caused by sun, useful for rheumatic and arthritic pain. Lemon Grass - Citronella Grass

Detoxifies digestive organs, stimulates digestion and blood circulation, useful as a mosquito repellant, relieves stress and tension. The citrusy flavors of lemongrass blend beautifully and make a delicious cup of herbal tea. It contains a component called citral that helps to digest food. Lemongrass tea is detox tea.

Haldu - Adina Cordifolia

It treats wounds, discoloration of the skin, other skin diseases, improves liver function and metabolism, restores physical strength in case of fever.

Kala Bansa - Malabar Nut/Vasaka

Kala Bansa treats cold, cough and asthma, leprosy and blood disorders, cures diarrhoea, dysentery, vomiting, kills white ants, mosquitoes and flies.

Planting an herb garden is a wonderful way to enjoy the sights, smells, and tastes of a wide variety of plants. Fresh herbal plants gardening are often easy to cultivate and can grow in a small garden in the back yard, in pots on an outdoor patio or sunroom, or even in a window box inside a kitchen. Gardening is a terrific hobby and allows your senior loved one an opportunity to show his or her creativity. It is a great activity that can be shared with others like grandchildren, with friends in a club as a social activity, or even alone. Not only is gardening relaxing but it also improves hand-eye coordination, motor skills and self-esteem.
